Bevees’ Beer to Beer cracks open the latest and greatest non-alcoholic brews from around B.C., Canada, and the world to help you decide how to spend your hard-earned dough.
Summer may or may not be on the wane, but there's no question that the season of crispy boys is over.
If you're suffering palate fatigue from too many light, easy-drinking lagers and their ilk, it's time to upgrade your IBU game. (That’s International Bitterness Units, a measure of how bitter a beer is.)
Here are a couple of Canadian-made pale ales that will satisfy your hankering for hops while soothing your mid-summer thirst.
iOTA Pale Ale
iOTA Pale Ale is a fantastic non-alcoholic craft beer.
It resembles the sunset, smells like an old-growth forest after a fresh rain, and satisfies the soul like liquid ambrosia.
Perhaps an explanation for this lapse into poetry is in order.
At the tasting room of Victoria’s Phillips Brewing, the makers of iOTA, you can drink iOTA Pale Ale on tap. You read that right: a non-alcoholic beer. ON TAP.
While drinking a can of non-alcoholic craft beer wherever and whenever is a wonderful freedom, getting to savour a freshly poured glass of it while sitting at a bar, surrounded by unsuspecting tipplers, is another experience entirely.
One that leads to visions of sunsets, forests, and libations befitting the gods.
So yes, drink iOTA Pale Ale from the can. But for a truly enlightening experience, try it fresh from the source.
Bevees carries the full iOTA line, including the pilsner, hazy IPA, and cerveza.
Harmon's Jack Pine Non-Alc Pale Ale
Four-thousand kilometres from Victoria in London, Ontario, three guys with more than four decades of experience in the industry make non-alcoholic beer under the name Harmon's Craft Brewing.
Their handsomely labelled Jack Pine pale ale is a nod to the Pacific Northwest. And an admirable nod it is.
It pours cloudy and tawny, releasing a pleasant burst of pine scent, like a freshly opened cone.
Robust-bodied with a well-rounded mouthfeel, it finishes with a rugged bitterness and an uplifting twist of citrus.
This is the kind of beer you want to keep on hand to accompany your weekend endeavours ⏤ whether it's exploring the great outdoors, chopping wood, or just kicking back at the cabin.
Bevees also carries Harmon's Half-Day Hazy IPA and Lunchbox Lagered Ale.
iOTA Pale Ale and Harmon's Jack Pine Non-alc Pale Ale are available now at Bevees in Port Coquitlam, home to Greater Vancouver's largest selection of booze-free beverages.
